New On My Website

Updates- I've added updates to most of "My Chicano Music Articles" pages. Some of the latest things going on with the artists I've written about.

60s Eastside Flyers / Band Card Page- Check out this new page on my website which has scans of flyers from East L.A.s golden age.  My teenage bands, Mark & the Escorts, The Men From S.O.U.N.D., and Nineteen Eighty Four shared the bill with the top bands of the era.  The 60s Eastside Flyers / Band Card page will lead you to nine pages of vintage flyers!  You will also find 8 pages of vintage band cards from the era!  

Record / CD Labels Page- Visit my other new page where you can see scans of my record and CD labels, as well as album and CD covers.  Click here to check it out.

Sound Bytes- There are now sound bytes of every artist featured on        My Chicano Music Articles pages.  They can be found at the end of each article.  There are also sound bytes of Mark & the Escorts, as well as later Mark Guerrero solo recordings, on my Recordings page.  You'll need Real Audio.  If you don't already have it, you can download it from any page where there are sound bytes.  There are also sound bytes of additional Lalo Guerrero songs on my "Lalo, My Life and Music" article, which can be found on the Miscellaneous Writings page.

Tribute To Don Tosti- Check out my recent article about the event held on August 17, 2004 in Palm Springs, CA to honor the late Don Tosti.  It's on my "miscellaneous writings" page, article 29.

Ronnie & the Casuals- Read my recent article on Ronnie & the Casuals.  One of the best bands of East L.A.'s golden age of the mid 60s.  Their 1964 album "Everybody Jerk" is an Eastside classic.  It's on my "Chicano music articles" page, article 26.

"Lalo-  My Life and Music"- book released in 2002 on the life of my dad, Lalo Guerrero by Lalo Guerrero and Sherilyn Meece Mentes, published by The University of Arizona Press.  Read my article on the book on my "Miscellaneous Articles Page," article 9.  For additional information visit www.uapress.arizona.edu.  

Lectures

Mark Guerrero Lectures- Mark Guerrero spoke at Cal State Fullerton to a "Mexican Music" class on April 17, 2002, and at Cal State Los Angeles to a "Chicano Popular Culture" class on May 15, 2002.  The invitations came via my website.  On May 2, 2003, I spoke to the student body at Desert Hot Springs High School about Chicanos in the music business.  Don Tosti and Palm Springs musician John Mesa also spoke.

Television

Midday Show with Tony Valdez- Mark Guerrero appeared on the Fox 11 show in Los Angeles on May 4, 2003, talking about Chicano music, particularly the Eastside Sound of the 60s, and promoted the upcoming concert at the Autry Museum in Los Angeles featuring Mark Guerrero & Radio Aztlán, Lalo Guerrero, and Thee Midniters.

"Fernandomania"- Documentary on Dodger pitcher of the 80s, Fernando Valenzuela, on ESPN Classic channel aired for the first time, August 28, 2001.  “Fernando, El Toro” written by Mark Guerrero and “Ole Fernando” written by Lalo Guerrero were featured as well as interview sound bites by Mark & Lalo taped at Dodger Stadium in July at Fernando Valenzuela Bobble Head Doll Day.  Both songs were recorded by Lalo Guerrero in 1981 and released on Ambiente Records. Lalo plays a portion of his song during the interview as well.  If you missed it, it has been shown many times since and will be shown again in the future.

The Talking Stick with Mark Nichols- The first Native-American-produced television show.  Lalo and Mark Guerrero taped two 1/2 hour shows on June 17, 2004, on Time Warner Cable (Greater Palm Springs area only):  The two parts aired several times during the month of June and have additional airings throughout the year.  On Tuesday, September 9th, Mark Guerrero taped a half hour show by himself that aired three times in September and will also have additional airings throughout the year.

Melinda Reed Show- Mark Guerrero and singer-songwriter/keyboardist, Johnny Mesa, taped a 15 minute segment discussing the Don Tosti memorial concert, which took place at the Riviera Hotel in Palm Springs on Sunday afternoon, October 3, 2004.  It aired locally several times in the Coachella Valley on Time Warner Cable in late September.

Passages

Don Tosti- Legendary Chicano musician/composer/arranger Don Tosti passed away, August 2, 2004, at his home in Palm Springs, CA at the age of 81.  Read about his extraordinary life and career on "My Chicano Music Articles" page, article 3.

Larry Tackett- Former vocalist with the duo Meep Meep & the Roadrunner, passed away March 8, 2004.  His duo recorded a single for Eddie Davis' Boomerang label in the early 60s, produced by Billy Cardenas and backed by Ronnie & the Casuals.  The songs recorded were "Justine" and "B Flat Blues."  Billy Cardenas called me and asked me to put this information up on my website.

Rudy Valona- Influential lead guitarist for The Blendells in the 1960s, passed away December 26, 2003.  The Blendells, from East L.A., scored a national hit record with "La La La La La" in 1965.  Rudy and his music will be missed.
