Radio
Mark Guerrero's "Chicano Music
Chronicles"- My own internet radio show which ran from December 2005
through August 2007 on
www.crnlive.com. The shows ran one to two hours and featured the music of the
legends and pioneers of Chicano music. My first show spotlights the music
of my dad, the late great "Father of Chicano Music," Lalo Guerrero. I play
twelve of my favorite Lalo recordings and talk about the songs and give
background information. Most of the shows include
interviews with the artists themselves. Shows I've done with in studio
guests include Trini Lopez, Chan Romero, El Chicano, Tierra, Little Ray
Jimenez, Geree, and Little Willie G. I've also done a show on the music of my dad, Lalo
Guerrero and another on my own music. My 10th show features
the classic recordings of the Eastside Sound of the 60s.
It features interviews with members of Cannibal & the Headhunters, the Premiers,
the Blendells, the Romancers, the Salas Brothers, and the Sisters. My 11th
show features the great music of singer/songwriter Hirth Martinez, with
Hirth in studio. The 12th show features the music of 80s Chicano punk
band, Los Illegals,
with leader and founder, Willie Herrón, bassist Jesus "Xuiy" Velo, and
drummer Bill Reyes. All twelve shows are archived on my website on the "Chicano
Music Chronicles" page. For more information on the show, visit

CDs
Chávez Ravine by Ry Cooder-
magnificent
new CD by the legendary guitarist/producer on the Nonesuch/Perro Verde record
label, which contains songs and/or vocal performances by Ry Cooder, Lalo
Guerrero, Little Willie G. (of Thee Midniters fame), Ersi Arvisu (of The Sisters
& El Chicano fame), Rudy Salas (of Tierra fame), David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, and Don Tosti, among others.
The CD's theme involves the destruction of the barrio of Chavez Ravine to build
Dodger Stadium in the early 60s. The songs are in English, Spanish, and
some are bi-lingual. Pachuco slang, or Caló, is also used throughout.
Hopefully this CD will do for Chicano music what Cooder's "Buena Vista Social
Club" did for Cuban music and some of it's pioneers. Chávez Ravine is now
available in stores.
Lalo Guerrero Comedy CD- a Lalo
Guerrero parody CD called "The Funny Side of Lalo Guerrero" has just been
released nationally on the Brown Bag Records label, distributed by Norwalk
Distributors. It's also available at
www.brownbagrecords.com and will
soon be available here on my website. It has twelve classic Lalo Guerrero
parodies, including four that have never been available on CD; "To All the Girls
I've Loved Before," "You're Impossible," "Lucila," and "Mr. Jackson." It's
beautifully packaged with quotes from my dad, my brother Dan, and yours truly.

Passages
Alfredo Arteaga- (poet,
author, scholar, professor at U.C. Berkeley) In April 2005, at Alfred's invitation, I went
up to Berkeley to speak about Chicano music at one of
his classes. After my presentation, we had lunch with several of his students
and had some great conversation and a good time. In
June of 2006, I took my band and performed in Riverside,
CA at an event to raise funds for Arteaga's medical
procedure in Thailand. In March of 2007, I went back to
the Bay area to do a lecture/performance for Cesar
Chavez day at the Marin County Civic Center. I e mailed
Alfred to let him know about it. He showed up.
Afterwords he and I, along with songwriter pc Muńoz and
Assistant public defender Jose Varela, went to lunch at
a Chinese restaurant and had some more great
conversation. Alfredo had lost a lot of weight and
looked great. He was soon to take some time off
from teaching so he could travel. That was the
last time I spoke with or saw him. Alfredo Arteaga was a great
person, aside from being a brilliant poet and scholar.

Sal Chico- Latin/

Wednesday, April 2, 2008 in Los Angeles. Sal
started with the Armenta Brothers and went on to form
his own group the Sal Chico Band, who was very popular
in the 60s in East L.A. and around Southern California.
He retired from his band in the early 70s after which
Joe Espinoza, formerly of the Village Callers, took it
over. He renamed the band Chico in his honor, and
has kept it going ever since.
Freddy Fender (b.
Baldemar Huerta)- The Texas-Mexico border singer,
who scored major hits with "Before the Next Teardrop
Falls" and "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights," passed away
Saturday, October 14, 2006 in his hometown of Corpus
Christi, Texas. He was diagnosed with lung cancer
in early 2006.

September 19, 2006 in Huntington Beach, California at
the age of 77. He's best known as writer of the
classic song "Tequila," which was released in January of
1958. He used the name Chuck Rio as writer of
"Tequila" because he was signed to a different record
label at the time. He continued to use Chuck Rio
