LOS ANGELES,/PRNewswire/-- From Shakira to
Juanes, Café Tacuba to Mana,Latin Rock has never been more popular than it is
today. But in Mexican-American neighborhoods decades ago there was a band that
earned acclaim behind only Santana and War, and remains a favorite among Latino
baby boomers – El Chicano
Today, with a new album in the works,
scoring a documentary on union organizer and their friend Cesar Chavez, also on a PBS
documentary 2-part series “La Raza de Colorado” and preparing a book on it’s
lengthy history, El Chicano is reaping the rewards of it’s influence on a new
generation of Latin rockers.
Formed in 1968 in East Los Angeles and
nurtured by the area’s racially diverse audiences, El Chicano blended bilingual
lyrics with hard rock and Latin rhythms, as well as soul, funk, blues and jazz.
Though their name would suggest that all they do is Latin music they have always
been much more, covering music from everyone the Beatles, Cream, Van Morrison
to many top jazz artists and of course adding their special sound to some
classic recordings of Latin artists but also writing many songs in their albums
and Cd’s.
El Chicano is once again touring
and presenting a great show with some of the original members –
Bobby Espinosa (organ- vocals)
Freddie Sanchez (bass- vocals)
Jerry Salas (guitar- vocals)
Rudy Regalado (timbales- percussion)
